Fluid-fluid displacement in mixed-wet porous media
نویسندگان
چکیده
Wettability exerts fundamental control over multiphase flow in porous media, which has been extensively studied uniform-wet media. In contrast, mixed-wet media is less well-understood. We combine microfluidic experiments and pore-scale simulations to study the displacement of oil by water a mostly oil-wet patterned with discrete water-wet clusters. Our work demonstrates complex nature wettability it presents experimental numerical platforms upon further insights can be drawn.

Stabilizing fluid–fluid displacements in porous media through wettability alteration
We study experimentally how wettability impacts fluid–fluid displacement patterns in granular media. We inject a low-viscosity fluid (air) into a thin bed of glass beads initially saturated with a more-viscous fluid (a water/glycerol mixture). Chemical treatment of glass surfaces allows us to control the wetting properties of the medium and modify the contact angle θ from 5 deg (drainage) to 12...
متن کاملTransient Fluid Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media
A stable Alternating Direction Implicit finite-difference algorithm is used to model transient fiuid flow in heterogeneous porous media. In connection with the laboratory system for pressure transient testing of core permeability, the effects of permeability heterogeneities on the characteristics of the pressure transient were investigated. The results show that the early portion of the pressur...

The research activity of the group led by Dr Taraskin covers a wide area of theoretical condensed matter science and statistical physics. The properties of disordered systems are of particular interest, including nonequilibrium phase-transitions in disordered complex networks and the spectral properties of single-particle electronic and vibrational excitations in disordered materials. متن کاملCoupling Fluid Flow with Porous Media Flow
The transport of substances back and forth between surface water and groundwater is a very serious problem. We study herein the mathematical model of this setting consisting of the Stokes equations in the fluid region coupled with the Darcy equations in the porous medium, coupled across the interface by the Beavers–Joseph–Saffman conditions. We prove existence of weak solutions and give a compl...
متن کاملEffects of Pore-Scale Disorder on Fluid Displacement in Partially-Wettable Porous Media
We present a systematic, quantitative assessment of the impact of pore size disorder and its interplay with flow rates and wettability on immiscible displacement of a viscous fluid. Pore-scale simulations and micromodel experiments show that reducing disorder increases the displacement efficiency and compactness, minimizing the fluid-fluid interfacial area, through (i) trapping at low rates and...
